Teachers can use simple words, such as ant, apple, act, and ax, to teach children the short “a” sound at the beginning of the words. Mathematics has “addition” and “angle,” English has “adverb,” “adjective,” and “antonym,” and Science has “anatomy” and “acid.” Short “a” sounds also appear in words taught in a variety of school subjects. A multitude of dinosaur names begin with the short “a,” including Avimimus, Ankylosaurus, Allosaurus, Albertosaurus, Alamosaurus and Acrocanthosaurus. Professions that begin with the sound are astronaut and athlete. Noteworthy people whose last names begin with the short “a” sound are John Adams, Susan B. Some geographic locations in this category are Alabama, Antarctica, Africa and the Atlantic Ocean. More broadly, the word “amphibian” also begins with the same vowel sound. Specific animals that begin with the short “a” include alligator, alpaca, anaconda, anteater, albatross and antelope. This entry was posted in Sickle Hocks and tagged hocks, movement, sickle hocks, structure. When it comes to endurance and efficient movement, recognize your dog’s limitations, and do what he or she can do comfortably. What you shouldn’t do is ask of them something beyond their physical ability. You enjoy him or her, feed them treats, and spoil the dog rotten, What you don’t do is breed them. So what do you do if your dog does have sickle hocks? This is why we at National Purebred Dog Day ® emphasize the importance of getting a dog from an heritage breeder invested in their breed, one who knows the importance of breeding sound dogs to create sound puppies. More importantly, a sound dog is less likely to “break down” from injury she’ll experience less fatigue, be able to take those long walks with you, and show greater efficiency in work (even if it’s only to help you corral those squirrels).Īnd mostly importantly of all, a sound dog stays healthier and more active throughout her life. Sickle hocks limit what your dog can do with you comfortably, and without pain. Do you like to take long walks with your dog? Does your dog love playing fetch? Running agility? Tracking for fun? Does your dog help you “work” by giving the squirrels in the yard “what for?” It matters because the dog with over-angulation resulting in sickle hocks can’t extend his hocks properly while he trots, and that will restrict the driving force of his hind legs, and therefore reduce the power in his rear.ĭoes this matter if you don’t have a show dog? Well, you tell us. She’ll tired more easily from activities she’d love to do for a longer time. She’ll spend more energy bobbing up and down than going after the ball you just threw. If your dog is “just a pet,” this will impact the pleasure s/he has going for long walks and playing fetch.Ī dog with sickle hocks will have no follow-through (remember when we talked about a golf swing’s “follow through a couple of weeks ago?) With no follow through, the dog’s drive will be reduced. Why does this matter? Let us count the ways:Ī dog with sickle hocks has a poorly synchronized gait which destroys the dog’s efficiency. The Pomeranian is short coupled and his well-ribbed body goes to a short loin. His barrel is well-rounded and his well-sprung ribs provides enough space for his lungs and heart. The hock angle doesn’t change while the dog’s leg is moving, and so from a side view, the motion of the dog’s rear legs moving is not unlike the motion of someone using a sickle. The ideal silhouette of a Pomeranian depicts a stylish, compact, well-balanced, sturdy, dainty small dog. What causes sickle hocks? Usually, a more acute angulation of the hock joint than is normal for the breed. Instead of moving forward with power, the dog’s energy goes “up and down.” When trotting, his top line will bob up and down which results in wasted energy. How can you tell if your dog has sickle hocks?Ī dog with sickle hocks usually stands with his rear pasterns slightly forward in order to support weak hindquarters. The descriptive term, “sickle hocks” comes from the farm tool seen at the left, and if you study the other pictures, you’ll see why. “Sickle hocks.” Good thing? Bad thing? Does your dog have them? Does it matter if your dog has them and is, “just a pet?” Yes, it matters. ![]() Douglas-Harper Online Etymology Dictionary tells us that both noun and verb exist - the noun is since 1860, the verb is first recorded 1868, from the noun. ![]() Collins agreed on "photos" and agreed on that verb does not exist.no "photoes", no "photoed", no "photoing" Cambridge gives "photos", clearly makes it as AmE-only and also insists that there's no verb - i.e.Merriam-Webster gives plural as "photos", but does not recognize "photoes" as a valid word at all, albeit it does recognize "photoed" as a verb.Oxford clearly gives plural as "photos", but suggests that "photoes" is a verb."photoes" => ~3,340,000 ghits, which is ~1000 times less often used, although some of the results point to English grammar forums where some people suggest that "photoes" might be indeed correct form given Greek origin of the word. The best way to use ASL right is to immerse in daily language interactions and conversations with Deaf/Ameslan people (or ASLians). What's the proper plural for "photo" - "photos", "photoes", or it is generally desired to rephrase the whole thing and stick with "photographs", "images", "shots", "pictures", etc?Īs for usage frequency, quick Google search reveals that: You will see some examples in video sentences.ĪSL is very much alive and indefinitely constructable as any spoken language. ![]() At the end of my story, a witch-queen in a red dress found me rifling through her study, held out her hand, and whisked me down to the ballroom, just in time for the climactic execution. I’ve felt theater overwhelm me before, but until last Tuesday, I’ve never felt it pass through me. I’d recommend a quick skim of Macbeth if you’re really interested in the whodunit aspect full enjoyment of the atmospherics, though, requires no cramming whatsoever. (If you’re interested in a strong story, though, I’d recommend you follow a specific actor, especially when someone plunges out of a room with purpose.) But this is the nonsense math of nightmares, a perfect Chinese box that invites you to look for solutions that seem designed, never to come fully into focus. Upon reflection, though, I don’t think there’s a right or wrong way. “Did I do it right?” I wondered afterward, having realized I’d missed half the plot points my fellow travelers had stumbled upon - and they’d, in turn, missed half the things I’d seen. The amateur cryptographers of Lost will be be similarly pleased, as will the Escherheads who fetishized Inception. The show’s influences spider far beyond the Bard and Hitch: Players of puzzle-horror first person video games like BioShock will find the Sleep experience highly gratifying (and the notion of becoming a camera highly familiar). “If it’s all too much,” a docent tells you at the beginning, “there’s always the bar.” I made use of it. (Maxine Doyle’s wall-crawling choreography - two parts parkour to one part The Fly - helps the actors doff their humanity with ease their sexuality, however, remains fixatingly intact.) And then there’s Macbeth himself, conjuring the Weird Sisters in a strobe-lit demon disco. The presumed Lady Macbeth herself is poised above her bloody bathtub, or climbing a mountain of antique furniture like a rabid ape. Danvers from Hitchcock’s Rebecca - here in loyal service to Lady Macbeth - spooning milky poison down the gullet of a soused, super-pregnant woman who very well might be Lady Macduff. A gelid blonde who may or may not be Mrs. And all the while, you’re carried on perfectly modulated aural swells of Bernard Herrmann pastiche, courtesy of sound designer Stephen Dobbie.Īlong the way, you’re guaranteed to stumble on what Punchdrunk’s directors, designers, and choreographers (Felix Barrett, Maxine Doyle, Livi Vaughan, and Beatrice Minns) refer to as “situations”: a man who may or may not be Duncan, right king of Scotland, being murdered in a sheikh’s tent. (N.B.: This doesn’t exempt you from actor contact - in fact, you’re practically guaranteed to be interfered with at some point in the approximately three hours it takes to survey the space and absorb the long arc of the story.) Fending for yourself in the fictional “McKittrick Hotel” (a pointed Vertigo reference that dizzy or claustrophobic types should take to heart before booking), you’re given the run of six misty, intricately detailed floors, with more than 100 rooms full of (and this is a partial list) clues, red herrings, hair samples, teeth scattered like gaming dice, magic spells, animal bones in carefully labeled bins, a mass of old-fashioned desk fans that turn on and off at random, rotary-dial phones that have actual dial tones, grisly private eye photos of corpses, bloodstains that appear and disappear, patchy ad hoc taxidermy posed for maximal menace, and a ballroom stalked by moving trees. You and your fellow voyeurs, enskulled in your morbid headgear, quickly become part of the creepy scenery. Presented with a bone-white Venetian beak mask (the kind favored by plague doctors in the Renaissance), you’re invited to gawk, shame-free, at whatever you see, to rifle through drawers, files, Rolodexes, and even coffins. (Also: ’tis sold-out, but set to extend, so get your trigger finger ready.) The UK’s Punchdrunk theater collective - famed for these sorts of immersive, site-specific experiments back on their native sod - has finally brought Sleep to the city that never does, and now, most certainly, won’t: The show infects your dreams. What in Hecate’s name is Sleep No More? A dance-theater horror show? A wordless, nonlinear mash-up of Macbeth and the darker psychosexual corners of Hitchcock? A six-story Jazz Age haunted house for grown-ups and anyone who’s ever entertained sick cineast-y fantasies of living inside a Kubrick movie? ’Tis all these, and more besides: a deed without a name, to quote an infernal authority. ![]() These jurisdictions typically rely on streets and their intersections to define the boundaries of each electoral district. ![]() The history of metes and bounds use affects election constituency boundaries today as well, as these are still described using metes and bounds, even in jurisdictions where they are not used in property sales. To this day, Texas still primarily uses the metes and bounds system due to the fact that it was an independent republic prior to achieving statehood. The history of metes and bounds use continues today in those states that were originally part of the Thirteen Colonies – or before 1785 – in areas where land was being allocated, such as Maine, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Vermont. ![]() The history of metes and bounds use came into play back during the days of the original colonies making up the United States. This is because a more detailed definition would otherwise be either too expensive to carry out, or simply unnecessary. For instance, a manmade wall, public roadway, or even an existing building can serve as a plot of land’s “bounds.” Bounds are often used to define bigger pieces of property, such as farms, or political subdivisions, including a town’s boundaries. “Bounds” is a term that is used to describe a property’s boundary lines in a more general sense. This means that metes can be described as north, south, east, or west. A property’s direction may be as simple as a compass point, or the direction that each point of the property faces. Metes can also be found by determining a plot of land’s direction. “Metes” are a piece of property’s boundary lines, as determined by measuring its “straight runs.” A straight run is the distance between two points. 70 W (range 70 west) of the 6th PM (the sixth principal meridian, a north–south reference line) in ABC County, Colorado, bears N 45° W 1,320 feet, at which point of beginning an iron stake has been placed thence south 600 feet to a point also marked by an iron stake thence N 45° W 700 feet to a large oak tree thence northeasterly to the point of beginning.” “Beginning at a point from which the north quarter corner of Section 4, T. The diplomacy isn't something I can say much about. I've been told that this issue is known about and will be fixed before release, so keep that in mind while reading this. That or be very diplomatically savvy, bringing in whatever you're short of. What is evident, however, is that you're going to have to be tactical in where you conquer, if only to ensure you get all the resources you need. While Creative Assembly Sofia did start by looking at the geographical locations, placing forest villages in major forested areas, stone settlements solely around mountains and so forth, they naturally had to tweak this a little for gameplay reasons. Fortunately, if you can't find a city you can get a small boost to resources, as well as other faction-wide boosts, through the Royal Decrees system. These minor settlements are resource-specific. As before, a province will have one major settlement and one or more minor ones. In Three Kingdoms: Total War I praised the settlement development, how you could focus a settlement, and Troy seems to be taking this further. With five resources to balance, you're going to have to think about your development. Gold is only used for the most advanced of buildings and units. Wood and Stone, from what I can tell, aren't used in the upkeep of anything, but you'll need a stockpile for building and repairing structures. ![]() Don't have enough, you'll start noticing a number of troops deserting. What you will find, however, is that bronze is also needed for the upkeep of later units, their swords, spears and shields are made from something and this was the time of bronze weaponry. Seeing this in action is certainly interesting.įood is essential for your army as well as your characters, generals or agents. We'd already been told about the game having Food, Wood, Stone and Bronze as the core resources, with Gold being a fifth special resource. Here, you'll find yourself balancing much more. For the most part, you'll be used to Total War titles simply showing your treasury, all being represented by gold. This leads me to what seems to be the true fundamental difference between Total War Saga: Troy and the other Total War titles, the economy. Related Story Chris Wray Hyenas Impressions – MP Shooter With a Twist Menelaus has great potential later on in the game as your allies have stronger troops for you to recruit, but to start with you're going to have to focus one region on the military. Honestly, I've found Paris more interesting, despite his more difficult starting position, if only for the options you've got to explore in the first few turns. You do this through several methods, such as completing missions, defeating and conquering Achaeans, gaining favour with whichever god Priam's interested in at that moment in time and, of course, simply donating gold to him. Essentially, you're competing to become the heir of Priam and to rule Troy. He also competes with Hector for "Priam's benevolence". If she is close to Paris, her mood is lifted and when she is happy, the region she is in also gains a boost to happiness. She is said to be the most beautiful woman ever, her beauty even bolstering the abilities of your troops, should you host some games in her honour. Well, you can invite her to a large feast, some games or to participate in a prayer, each boosting the region's happiness, growth and even recruitment costs and the experience of units in a province. Paris, on the other hand, can ask Helen to move and live closer to him. He also has the Call to Arms ability, letting him recruit allied units, offering the opportunity of simply building economic cities and having your armies consist totally of allied units. Menelaus, for example, can use the Spartan Colonies ability, letting him colonise an abandoned settlement without the use of an army. What we know is that each faction will have two unique aspects. We already know that the Amazons will also feature as day-one DLC content and when I asked the developers, I was told that if people want it, more factions will be added as later DLC. When the game launches there will be eight factions, four from the Greek side, four from the Trojan. At least somewhat, with there being several features to learn and some still to be shown. ![]() In the roughly one hundred turns I've spent as Menelaus and around sixty as Paris, I think I'm understanding how Total War Saga: Troy will play out on the campaign map.
